Review policy

How reviews on Construction Rating work, and how we keep them genuine.

Who can leave a review

Anyone with an account who has worked with a company as a subcontractor, supplier, client or employee can review it. You must be reviewing your own genuine experience.

You can't review a company you work for or own, a competitor, or a company that shares a director with yours.

Verified and unverified reviews

A review shows a Verified business email badge when the reviewer's account uses a confirmed email address at a business domain. Reviews from personal email addresses (such as Gmail or Hotmail) are published and labelled Unverified.

Only verified reviews count towards a company's star ratings, “would work again” score and the payment figures from subcontractors. Unverified reviews are shown but not counted.

How we check reviews

  • Every reviewer confirms that the review is their own genuine experience and that they haven't been offered anything to write it.
  • One review per reviewer for each company every 12 months, and no more than 5 reviews a day.
  • We check Companies House for shared directors when a reviewer gives their company number.
  • If a company receives an unusual number of reviews in a short time, new reviews are held until we have checked them.
  • We never accept payment to publish, remove, hide or improve a review, and we don't offer anything in return for reviews.

Order and fairness

Reviews are shown newest first. Positive and negative reviews are published on exactly the same terms, and the same rules decide whether any review is removed.

When a review can be removed

We remove a review only if it:

  • is not based on a real working relationship with the company;
  • is unlawful, abusive or discriminatory;
  • names or identifies individual people, or contains other personal data;
  • was written by someone with a conflict of interest; or
  • is taken down following a legal complaint under the process below.

Reporting a review and legal complaints

Every review has a “Report” link. Anyone can use it.

If you believe a review is defamatory, choose the legal complaint option. We follow the process in the Defamation (Operators of Websites) Regulations 2013: we send a copy of the complaint to the reviewer, who can respond, and we keep you informed. We never give a reviewer's identity to anyone without their consent or a court order.

Right of reply

A company that claims its page can post one public reply to each review. Companies can't edit or hide reviews.
