Construction Companies in Scotland

Scotland has its own big names in construction. The largest Scottish companies we list, by turnover in their latest accounts, are Robertson Group and Springfield Properties, both based in Elgin, followed by Galliford Try Infrastructure in Edinburgh, QTS Group in Strathaven and Bancon Homes in Banchory. UK-wide contractors work here too: Morgan Sindall, Kier and McLaughlin & Harvey won places on SCAPE's £2bn Scotland framework in 2021.

How they pay

Of the Scottish companies we list that file government payment reports, average payment times run from 21 to 48 days. Robertson's companies each report separately. Public work has extra protection: since March 2019, Scottish public bodies have had to use project bank accounts on building contracts worth £2m or more (£5m for civil engineering), so subcontractors are paid from a ring-fenced account. Frameworks

Much of Scotland's community building work, such as schools and health centres, goes through the hub programme. The Scottish Futures Trust runs it through five regional hub companies: North, East Central, South East, West and South West. By late 2025 it had almost £5bn of learning estate projects completed, under construction or in development.

Failures

Aberdeen housebuilder Stewart Milne Group went into administration in January 2024, owing about £154m to unsecured creditors across its companies. Glasgow contractor Hadden Construction followed in September 2024. See the failures register for more.
